Thoughts on Dean
I am very happy that I made the decision to go see Howard Dean speak one last time Tuesday night. It reminded me why I started following him in the first place. This campaign should be about us. Not one person. The New York Times, a little late, seems to have nailed this with the picture they had above the fold today announcing Dean’s “withdrawal” from the race. The picture is of a young woman, looks like she may have had a tear running down her face, wearing a Dean for America button watching Dean give the speech in Burlington where he resigned. It is the perfect picture because Dean isn’t in it. Maybe I’m reading in to it too much, but I think the layout editors who set up the front page knew what they were doing. The campaign was about that young woman, not Howard Dean. The ways campaigns are run were revolutionized, Dean showed that the youth do care; one just needs to show them that it matters that they care. It matters that they stand up and make their voices heard. Hopefully, and I am trying really hard to hold on to some of that “faith in the American people” that is so elusive to me, this movement will carry on. The Deanocrats will continue to shape this party and politics, as we know it.
