The Slack Album
I read a write-up on Pitchfork a couple of weeks ago about DJ n-wee doing a mash-up of Jay-Z and the Pavement album “Slanted and Enchanted.” I was tempted to download it as I love Pavement, but I have yet to download the DJ Danger Mouse mash-up of Jay-Z/the Beatles (the now infamous Grey Album). I figured I should have a point of reference before I listened to “The Slack Album” but for some reason I just didn’t want to take the time to download “the Grey Album.” I finally gave in. I haven’t downloaded The Grey Album yet, but I just finished up The Slack Album. I was sure that it was just going to be a train wreck, I couldn’t envision in my feeble brain how Jay-Z and Pavement could be married. I’m impressed. It works so much better than I could imagine. I highly recommend it to any Pavement fan…or vice versa, any Jay-Z fan. Parts of it just don’t work at all, but that is surprisingly rare…
In order to get it you will have to finally take the plunge and install bit torrent on your computer. Don’t worry; it’s a fine tool to have on your computer. Especially if you enjoy collecting legal bootlegs of concerts…such as the Pixies…speaking of…
I don’t know what to do. I’m still missing Coachella and two other Pixies shows from their North America tour. Now they are off in Europe doing their thing and I can’t help it, I feel compelled to collect all of those shows, too. When does it end? And why do I need to do it? The shows are amazing. All of the band members have been able to hone their skills over the last 20 years and it is nice to hear them putting their new skills into the Pixies live shows. It seems that they like to choose a different song each show to lie into and inject some new flavor. It’s nice. Eventually I’ll be able to put together a nice comp of the new live versions. Of course I will make the comp available for trade when that happens, but I don’t think I will get around to that until the end of the summer.
