Heroes Volume II: Worth the time? (w/spoilers)

The final episode of Heroes Volume II was easily the best of the entire season. Everything that happened in this one episode was what made the first season so great. Plenty of suspense from scene cut to scene cut and it ended with numerous cliff hangers making us want more. Unfortunately, the episode also had an unhealthy dose of what has made most of volume II nearly unbearable. Specifically, I’m referring to the Micah, Niki, and Monica subplot. I know a number of liberties needed to be played in order to tie up all of the loose ends brought on by the (necessary) writer’s strike, but there better be some quick justification next season for what all of that nonsense was about. Personally, I don’t have any reason to care about Niki possibly being dead at the moment. Her use seemed to have been exhausted in volume one and it feels like she was kept on simply due to contractual obligations. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe she is the real reason for the virus being unleashed to the public?

How they saved the world from the virus also left me a bit sour. Wow, Peter manages to catch it right before it hits the floor. Ho-hum. I grew up with comics, I know this is how things work, but the suspense wasn’t timed out properly so it was hard for me to suspend belief as the vial took a full three minutes to fall to the floor. My assumption has to be that gravity functions differently in the vault.

The last scene with Sylar in the alley shooting up like a heroin addict was well done, but the set up leaves me feeling like Volume III is just going to be a redux of Volume I. Hopefully Sylar will change his M.O. so it isn’t just Suresh spending a dozen episodes chasing him down again and constantly arriving five minute too late. What they really should be building up to is a city leveling battle between Peter and Sylar as they both continue to absorb powers from others.

In the end, hope is not lost. Like I said when I started this post this was the best of the entire season and I hope the forced premature end gives Tim Kreig the time he needs to revisit the successes and failures. Heroes can be saved with the return of suspense and some of the good guys losing their way. What I hope to see:

A complete Maya fallout. Do we really know the root cause of the virus?

A power tripping Parkman. We’ve already witnessed him stepping over that line, how much farther will he go.

Angela Petrelli, what is up? This is one of the best kept secrets of the show as far as I’m concerned. We know so little about the mother of Nathan and Peter. She must have a power, right? And is she also possibly Hiro’s mother due to her alluded to sexual relations with Kaito Nakamura? It is possible, isn’t it?

Will Peter give Nathan his blood so he can heal? I mean, isn’t everyone pretty much immune to death as along as Claire and Peter are around and willing to hook ‘em up with a transfusion? Heck, while we are at it, can’t Hiro just pop back in time and see who did everything? Those are two powers that need to be capped and fast. How long does someone need to be dead before they can’t be brought back? Noah was shot through the head, didn’t Angela say the only way to kill Adam was shooting him through the head? So does that mean Adam can’t actually be killed? Are you intentionally leaving me confused or are these all just cases of sloppy writing?

Where is the Haitian?

Adam’s return. It will take awhile, but he should be able to dig himself out of that grave seeing as he can regenerate. Maybe he can make a bone shovel out his femur.

  1. My question to you about Adam and the cutting off of his head. If we look at what happened to Peter at the end of season one where he blew up, his powers regenerated him from death. Since his powers was from Claire and Adam’s power is just like Claire’s, cutting off his head may not be enough. Hiro might have done the right thing to Adam. I’m not sure if you watch Angel but he was chained up in a box and dropped in the ocean. While Angel survived, this was an effective prison. Adam will continue to survive but being buried he is trapped in a living hell living and dying endlessly.

  2. Hmmm…maybe they don’t have the same type of healing? And wouldn’t Angela know that her son blew up and regenerated?

And what was with the brain in the vault?

  3. You have officially been linked on the CDP. Thanks!
