A Super Mario Christmas!
I stopped listening to the upper end of the radio dial years ago, but every now and then I’m traveling or in the car with someone and crossing out of the lower 90s becomes a necessity. This recently happened on a trip to Milwaukee prior to Thanksgiving and I stumbled upon an all Christmas music station. I find all Christmas music radio stations absolutely ghastly and can’t imagine people sitting there listening to them all day. However, someone must listen because commercial radio stations only do such things when they think an audience will hear the advertising that music fills the space in between.
A 24-hour Christmas music station, to me, is the epitome of what commercial radio has become in this country – watered down pandering without any interest in actually informing or promoting the arts. It is an opportunity for casual music listeners to hear the commercial radio world through my ears. That radio station, for more than 30 days, will not be exposing anyone to new or interesting music. I’m also willing to bet that the station is on pre-programmed cruise control so there is little possibility that if anything interesting happens in Milwaukee there won’t be a disc jockey to talk about it. In the rare case that there is a monkey behind the console who is allowed to do more than just push buttons, it is doubtful that the monkey truly has anything interesting to say. The art of the on-air DJ died years, if not decades, ago.
So what is my point and why is this entry called “A Super Mario Christmas”? Just like some songs by pop artists, I don’t hate all Christmas music. I like when the norm is broken and shifted and I’m surprised by something I completely expect to be bland and repetitive. That is why when I find a Christmas song that breaks some boundaries and turns the holiday upside down I’m ecstatic. The below song is the perfect example. It is off of an album called “The 8bits of Christmas” by the 8bit Peoples which features tired Christmas songs run through old school game consoles and brought back to life in Marioland. Enjoy!

AAAHHH!!! That’s awesome!!!
