Observations in flight numbers 1 through 6

1. If you come onto a lightly booked plane and the flight attendant gives you the opportunity to move to the section where there are three rows of empty seats, don’t choose the one seat in front of someone else.

 2. American Airlines magazine is one of the best bits of free reading one can find on an airplane. Articles are interesting and engaging and don’t make me feel like flying is only for the upper class. I like it so much I’m considering subscribing to it for home delivery. US Airways magazine? Boring and pretentious.

3. You may be rushed and you may be hungry, but please do not bring stinky food onto the plane. Specifically, do not brring McDonald’s onto the plane and sit next to me. The smell is somehow both repulsive, yet hunger triggering.

4. Say “hi” to the person sitting next to you. A full conversation isn’t necessary, but an acknowledgement that you know your neighbor is there is simply being friendly.

5. Don’t dress like a slob when you fly. It may be 6 a.m. and you may be dragging yourself out of bed, but you never know who you will be sitting next to. After working a summer driving trucks and lugging filthy summer camp baggage I hopped on a plane in ragged clothes and a little bit dirty. The nice woman sitting next to me struck up a conversation and it turns out she was an assignment editor for CNN. This is relevent because it was also my first summer out of journalism school and I was hungry for a job.

6. No flying with babies. If you need to fly with a baby please stow it in the cargo hold. And, oh yeah, don’t forget if it still has a soft spot on the top of it’s head it might explode like a shampoo bottle.
