Punker Than Thou: Angry Samoans “Lights Out”

In high school I was in a punk band called “Punker Than Thou” for roughly one study hall session. We came up with the name because we were sick of the punk rockers who felt the need to gentrify punk rock by putting others down in the scene based on the clothes they wore, what town the lived in, how many shows they had been to, or the most elitist of all, whose seven inches you had in your collection. The concept for the band was that we would completely play up the “I’m punker than you” stereotype and I would write song lyrics about knowing more and being cooler. It didn’t go very far, but we didn’t play off of it later when we made up a band called “Dead Rope” and started spreading rumors in the Connecticut punk rock scene about how f’n amazing they were, but they only did a 300 press run of their seven inch and rarely ever played shows at clubs and preferred rural cemeteries or the walk-in freezers of abandoned warehouses. They often stripped nude during their shows (a somewhat common occurrence for lead singers at punk rock shows in Connecticut) and had been banned from playing at clubs in Canada because they would often burn the Canadian flag at their shows. Astonishingly, rumors of the infamous band did eventually get back to us with friends of friends of friends supposedly actually seeing “Dead Rope” perform. Not surprising because the rumors we started usually started with “my cousin in Boston has a friend who saw ‘Dead Rope’ play…” Punker Than Thou, bitches. Anyway, I thought of this as I was finally getting down to categorizing my cds for the first time in two years. The chore often brings up old memories and I thought it would be fun to start occasionally posting songs I used to enjoy so I could show how much punker I still am then the lot of you. *snark*

First up, the Angry Samoans. A band that started in ‘78 and still occasionally gigs out. Apparently they recently toured Germany. I came across Angry Samoans when someone who knew I was into Operation Ivy recommended them to me. The only vinyl I ever added to my collection from the Somoans was the 1982 release “Back From Samoa.” It, along with an entire crate worth of my high school soundtrack, warped while in storage and a few years back I replaced it with a CD version. “Lights Out” was by far my favorite track from the release and clocking in at less than a minute is the ideal punk anthem.
